At the Austin Medical Centre he is Senior Consultant Surgeon
to the Spinal Injuries Unit and previously, Head of the
Plastic, Reconstructive, Microsurgical and Faciomaxilliary
Surgery units.
Dr. Sormann has pioneered in Australia surgery for
quadriplegic patients, restoring hand function by
reconstructing muscles and tendons.
In 1993, he performed the first Australian Implantation of
Bionic devices, assisting in the clinical trials for F.D.A (U.S
Federal Drugs Authority) with the Case Western University
Cleveland USA.
Dr. Gerard Sormann is the Founder and Medical Director
of the Quadriplegic Hand Foundation established to fund
facilities at the Austin Medical Centre for the treatment of
quadriplegic patients. The Foundation also supports research
into bionic, and other projects designed to assist people
with paralysis.
Participating in Australia’s Interplast program, he has
provided volunteer services in plastic surgery for our
geographical neighbours. Dr. Sormann was involved in
extending the program through the islands of Vanuatu. Much
of the work carried out in these islands involves treatment
of children with facial deformities such as cleft lips,
palates and other cranio facial deformities.
